Home PI solutions The PI Capacity Grid

The PI Capacity Grid allows you to convert the ‘soft skills’ into a competitive advantage.” – Ben Venter, managing partner, PI SouthAfrica

The PI Capacity Grid is the CEO’s dashboard of your organisation’s talent, helping you pinpoint exactly where and what the problems are in each and every unit within your organisation – and to identify which parts are working efficiently and effectively.

The PI Capacity Grid allows the manager of each unit to do the same with their teams – it is a version of the Vitality Curve as pioneered by Jack Welch, but it provides managers and CEOs with more information.

On the horizontal axis of the Capacity Grid, the manager needs to plot the match of an employee’s talents to the PRO – the talent description for the job. The use of the PI Survey and the PI PRO will enable this.

The vertical axis is a measure of performance as provided by the human resource department or any performance appraisal systems and measures in place within the company. This provides the checks and balances of the system: ensuring that it confirms and supports the information supplied by the PI survey and PRO.

The Capacity Grid is a key tool in identifying how effectively a culture of talent development and performance management is being created. It is a performance metric that precisely maps out how the business unit is performaing as a whole, and how individuals are performing within it.

The PI Capacity Grid enables managers to sort their staff in a clear cut, non-emotional way and gain an understanding of their team in a matter of weeks.

Capacity Grids can be used whenever a decision regarding appointing, developing and retaining talent needs to be made: so whenever staff need to be hired, given a raise or promoted. Capacity Grids should form part of company meetings about the organisation’s profitability and strategies.

Year on year, Capacity Grids can be used to map and plan a department’s growth and development. Improvement objectives for a business units should see:
•    a reduction in mismatches between talent and business outcomes, and
•    a reduction in poor performance.

Whether you already have your team in place or are still building it, the PI Capacity Grid helps you strategise your team’s improvement and growth.

The Capacity Grid doesn’t stop at showing you who your performers, stalwarts and road warriors are; it also allows you to build a strategy for development.
