This item concerns the most  comprehensive study ever conducted to understand management effectiveness.

The Gallup Organization's book First, Break all the Rules (granted, it sounds like South African politics), finds that superior employee performance is directly related to superior manager performance.

This is not a surprising conclusion – Peter Drucker, many years ago taught that  “management is the ability to convert effort into performance”

Gallup contends that managers are, more often than not, thwarted in their efforts to deliver by conventional wisdom. Conventional wisdom in the guise of policies and rules, rather than the manager, will determine pay, promotion, recognition, performance appraisal and status.

Conventional wisdom can be a major management obstacle.

Management is definitely not for sissies.

 

Executing the business plan

According to the literature, execution of the plan remains a challenge for business leaders.

Why is this? After all, the concepts of involvement, communication and gaining commitment are well understood.

Perhaps that’s the explanation: it’s only human to assume that because we have involved key players, communicated our goals and prepared the scorecards that execution will follow. Yet this is certainly not the case.
